Motherhood

The title page.

In the first panel, the woman frowns and holds a swaddled baby. In the second panel, the woman lies on a bed, sweaty and in labour. In the third panel, the woman sheds a tear and holds a knife. She is visibly pregnant. In the third panel, the woman bleeds from her abdomen where the knife is embedded.

At the center of the page, the same woman in a t-shirt and shorts. Flames surround her and she looks pained and angry.

In the first panel, a woman with her hair in a bun wears a wedding dress. In the second panel, the young grandmother holds a swaddled baby. In the third panel, a sketch of a diploma. In the third panel, a sketched family photo of the narrator’s grandparents, father, and uncle.

In the first panel, planes fly over tall buildings. In the second panel, a mantel with a clock, a statuette and a framed photo of the grandfather. In the third panel, grandmother holds father and uncle by the ears. In the fourth panel, a framed photo of grandmother on a graduation stage in her cap and gown, holding a diploma.

In the first panel, grandmother and the narrator at age 15 talk at the dinner table. In the second panel, grandfather in an armchair with a dark cloud over him. In the fifth panel, father and the narrator next to each other.

In the first panel, the narrator holds up her dagger. Flames manifest around her other hand. Her shirt says “kill kill kill.” In the second panel, she sits on the ground with her hands over her face. The dagger has been discarded to her side. At the bottom of the page, the narrator kneels with the dagger through her stomach.

In the first panel, the narrator and her mother carry bags, side by side. In the second and third panels, the mother speaks. In the fourth, the narrator has a hand on her hip, face expressing doubt. At the bottom of the page, the narrator looks frustrated while the mother speaks with enthusiasm.

A text box at the center of the page is surrounded with flowers and vines that grow out of it. The narrator hands from one vine where it attaches at her belly.
